As if this summer’s shark scares on New England shores weren’t grim enough, the dead body of a 13-foot-long, 1,500-pound great white shark washed ashore at a beach in Westport, Mass. near the Rhode Island border over the weekend. Researchers went to the beach to dissect and examine the shark, and apparently couldn’t determine a cause of death.

Officials told unfortunate beach-goers that they’ll just have to deal with the rotting carcass while it decomposes because it is too big to move, according to the Boston Herald. The cause of death won’t be determined for a while, but since there were no apparent signs of trauma the causes were likely food-related or accidental. He probably just had a seal that didn’t quite agree with him.
