Marblehead native Shalane Flanagan is a TOTAL Badass Chick and although she wanted to win the 2014 Boston Marathon on Monday, it doesn’t make a difference that she didn’t! She’s a decorated Olympian, a national champion and has set plenty of records during her career. And she’s only 32. (Bonus: she and I share a birthday… what up, July 8!)
Shalane was born in Colorado and raised in Marblehead. She went to college (and ran, of course!) at UNC and has made a career out of her athleticism. Apparently the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree, because Shalane’s mom is also a massively accomplished runner. On Monday, Shalane led the women for 19 miles and ultimately finished seventh. In a great post-run interview, she cried about not winning the “olive wreath,” but I think her tears show a sign of strength and heart. She ran so hard for this city, and every single person was -and continues to be- in awe of her!
It’s so nice to see someone work so hard, especially in an effort to represent her home state on a very, very national (and emotional) platform. Shalane Flanagan, you are my Badass Chick of the week! Massachusetts is beyond proud of you!
