Earlier this week, Boston-based Badass Chick Barbara Lynch was awarded one of the highest honors in the restaurant industry: Outstanding Restauranteur at the James Beard Foundation Awards… and it all started when she was a teenager.
Barbara grew up in Southie and lived in extreme poverty with undiagnosed learning disabilities. At age 13, she got her first kitchen job and, in high school, dreamed of one day becoming a chef. She began to throw herself into her craft, and in her 20’s she was already working with incredibly talented and esteemed chefs like Todd English.
In 1998, she opened her own restaurant… and now, just 16 years later, she has 8 restaurants to her name. Barbara has been nominated for (and won!) countless awards throughout her tenure as a chef, and one of the coolest things about her is that she even established her own charity called the Barbara Lynch Foundation. Inspired by her upbringing, she works with at-risk children to provide life skills, leadership and support through nutrition, exercise and community involvement.
Not only is it badass to run your own company and be in charge of 8 restaurants and over 200 employees (woah!), but the fact that Barbara was able to overcome her upbringing and inspire others with her non-profit is the icing on the cake!
