I think it goes without saying that Dr. Maya Angelou is, hands-down, this week’s Badass Chick. Maya was perhaps known best as a writer – who didn’t read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings at some point in school? – but she was also a singer, dancer and director. She was nominated for both an Emmy and a Tony, and she won three Grammys. She was the second writer in history to ever read a poem at a presidential inauguration.
Not only was Maya a creative powerhouse, but she was also known for being a good, kind person and for shining light on those around her. Oprah wrote this after her mentor’s passing this week: “She moved through the world with unshakeable calm, confidence and a fierce grace…She will always be the rainbow in my clouds.” I certainly can’t sum her influence up better than Oprah can. I can, however, provide a quick anecdote that supports Oprah’s claim: I have a friend who met Maya once at a press conference. My friend introduced herself, and that was that. Hours later, at the reception, Maya sought out my friend, addressed her by name and struck up a conversation. She remembered one random person’s name, in a sea of hundreds from that evening, let alone thousands from her lifetime. After my friend acknowledged her astonishment, Maya responded that remembering a person’s name is one of the simplest things you can do to show another human being respect. She was just that kind of woman.
Thanks to classroom education, I certainly don’t foresee anyone forgetting about the influence that Maya had on the world. Badass Chick is about highlighting the good girls, the girls who we should all look up to, and Dr. Maya Angelou was, without a doubt, one of the baddest Badass Chicks of all. May she rest peacefully.
“You are the sum total of everything you’ve ever seen, heard, eaten, smelled, been told, forgot – it’s all there. Everything influences each of us, and because of that I try to make sure that my experiences are positive.” – Dr. Maya Angelou
