This week’s Badass Chick is Amanda Robb, a teacher at Jeremiah Burke High School in Dorchester. Amanda teaches biology and physics and is always looking for new ways to make learning fun for her students.
Most teachers spend money out of their own pockets for little things in the classroom, but many big projects are just too much for them – or their school districts – to fund. So, she decided to work with DonorsChoose.org, a web site where public school teachers can get funding for classroom projects. Through DonorsChoose.org, Amanda set up a little web site for herself and explained the different ideas that she would like to have funded for her classroom. Then, businesses or every day people can fund those particular ideas. Amanda’s latest idea was just funded by Staples: she asked for K’Nex roller coaster kits which would enable her children to better understand physics.
The coolest part about Amanda is that she used to be a scientist studying for her PhD at Tufts, but she didn’t exactly feel as though she was helping people because she couldn’t see a daily impact. So she switched career paths and decided to get her Masters in teaching instead. She’s a passionate person who is working hard to get children eager to learn, and we can always use more teachers like that!
Bonus: Staples has teamed up with DonorsChoose.org through the Make Roar Happen Campaign and is sponsoring Katy Perry’s North American Tour, so Amanda and a guest, along with one of Amanda’s students and her mom, get to meet Katy Perry tonight! HOW FUN!
