Yesterday, we lost a pioneer of the entertainment industry: Joan Rivers. Whether you loved or hated her comedy, there’s no denying that she worked her ass off in show business for years and was paving the way for other women entertainers up until the day she died. For that, she is my Badass Chick of the Week!
Joan was born in 1933 in Brooklyn, NY. She began doing stand-up comedy in the 50s, became a regular guest host on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and eventually ended up competing against him when she landed her own late-night gig before it was canceled. Despite personal and professional setbacks, she refused to roll over and give up her career.
She did everything from writing and producing to (of course) red carpet hosting. She was an Emmy winner and Tony nominee. She didn’t give a damn about what people thought of her and her jokes, and she refused to back down. And, above all, it was so clear how much she loved her daughter Melissa and grandson Cooper.
The entertainment industry would not be what it is today if Joan hadn’t worked her magic, and for that I am eternally grateful. Joan, rest peacefully, you Badass Chick.
