I am pumped to introduce you to this week’s Badass Chick, Dedham-native Julie Anne Kelly. Julie is so cool. After beating Hodgkins Lymphoma, Julie and her friend Andrew created Haymakers for Hope, a non-profit which raises money for cancer research through boxing events. To date, they have raised over $2.5 million in less than four years.
Julie, a BC graduate, was diagnosed at 22 years old. She fought hard, and after getting a clean bill of health from her doctors, Julie was on a mission to remain healthy. She ran three marathons, competed in a triathlon and started taking up boxing. It was during her boxing training in 2008 that she met Andrew, who had lost his friend to cancer in high school. Clearly, they had something in common.
In 2009, Julie and Andrew decided to raise money for cancer “for fun,” without any specific fundraiser in mind, and Julie ended up winning the title of the NYC Golden Gloves at 132 pounds (awesome!). They knew they were onto something, so by 2011 they had established Haymakers for Hope, and their first charity boxing event raised just under $200,000. Year after year, the events keep getting bigger and better, and all the money raised goes to cancer research through Dana Farber, the Jimmy Fund and/or various cancer charities that the boxers wish to raise money for.
Next Thursday, they’re hosting their all-female Belles of the Brawl event at Royale and it’s going to be a blast. Tickets are still available and it’s a perfect, fun way to spend a night out since it’s incredibly entertaining and all goes to a great cause. Plus, yours truly will be one of the hosts and I can’t wait to watch!! Click here for ticket info.
