This week’s Badass Chick is Boston College graduate Maggie Hurley. She established a non-profit organization, L.O.V.E. for Haiti, and has created Institution Mixte Remax, a school which provides a free education for Haitian children.
Four and a half years ago, Maggie took her first trip to Haiti with Soles4Souls. She immediately fell in love and knew that this was to be her calling. Through shorter missionary trips, she was eventually connected with a couple who was building a house for themselves but decided to turn it into a school instead. Since Maggie has a degree in education, she knew this would be her place to provide help. Through fundraising, Maggie had found enough money to finish building the school and she hit the ground running.
In just two years, IMR has been able to provide an education for 95 students and will continue to grow when it kicks off its school year next week. In addition to providing an education, Maggie and her fellow educators are able to furnish students with vitamins, meals, uniforms and books- free of charge. They even hope to provide vaccines soon as well. Most importantly, Maggie provides the most crucial thing to these children: love.
Maggie has listened to her heart and is using her knowledge and compassion to help others. For that, she is my Badass Chick!
