This week’s Badass Chick is Lori Cain of Lancaster, MA, otherwise known as Miss Pink 2014! The annual Miss Pink Pageant, which is taking place Saturday, March 14th at the Danversport Yacht Club, was created by fellow Badass Chick Ashley Herron Shultz. It was created in 2010 as a way to celebrate women who have survived or are fighting breast cancer, while simultaneously raising money for research.
During the competition, these ladies are treated like total VIPs: they get makeovers, are provided beautiful gowns and sparkly jewelry, and get to strike a pose for a photo session. Then, contestants strut their stuff and share their personal stories as they compete for the title of Miss Pink, like Lori did (and won!) in 2014. Once she’s crowned the title, Miss Pink spends the year being a Breast Cancer Ambassador and appearing as a motivational speaker.
Lori’s story begins in July of 2011, when she was 44 and her husband found a lump in her breast. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer and within one week of discovery, had a mammogram, biopsy and surgery. Needless to say, her life was different. Lori held a hair shaving party with her friends and found plenty of ways to combat cancer. She even went to the gym every day keep herself in tip-top shape.
She was introduced to Miss Pink in 2013 and loved how she was treated like a princess. When she returned to compete again a year later, she won… despite the fact that she explicitly told the judges that she didn’t want to. They loved her so much, that they had to ignore her wishes. And she’s thrilled that they did. Now, at 48 and free of cancer, she has been able to use her Miss Pink title to connect with other breast cancer warriors and help them through their journey. She’s helped people buy wigs, coordinate food deliveries and spoken to patients one-on-one to guide them step-by-step through their fight.
Needless to say, Lori is my Badass Chick of the Week for not only kicking cancer’s ass, but for donating so much of her time to help others undergoing the difficult journey that she once led.
