This week’s Badass Chick is Chien-Chi Huang, creator of the Asian Breast Cancer Project and the Executive Director of Asian Women for Health. Asian Women for Health is an organization that aims to advance Asian women’s health and wellness through education, advocacy and support.
Chien-Chi was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in 2005 at the age of 40. A stay-at-home mom who thought she wasn’t at risk, Chien-Chi did lots of research to find herself a support group and get her through the tough time. However, she quickly discovered that she felt isolated from the other women because she was the only Asian in the room. She desperately wanted to talk to another person in her native language, Mandarin, but wasn’t able to find anyone. Chien-Chi felt that it was taboo in the Asian community to speak of health struggles. After offering her help to local hospitals by training to be an ambassador, the hospitals told her those types of programs didn’t exist, and suggested that she create one. So, she did! Thus, Asian Women for Health was born. She and her team offer cultural training to health care providers, educate women about their health and host monthly events to foster a community of support.
Chien-Chi saw a problem and created a solution to it, and is now a leader in the Asian women’s health care community. For that, she is my Badass Chick!
Asian Women for Health is hosting an event at the end of April about herbal teas and remedies, if you are interested! Click here to learn all about Chien-Chi, her organization and how you can get involved.
