This week’s Badass Chick is Stephanie Thomas, founder of Cur8able: personal styling for people with disabilities. She’s freakin’ awesome.
A quick overview of Stephanie’s life: she was born missing digits on her right hand and left foot. However, that never stopped her from cheerleading in high school, becoming Chicago Bulls Cheerleader or taking part in a beauty pageant to get herself some scholarships. Stephanie went on to receive her undergraduate degree in business administration and then her graduate degree in communications. She landed a spot hosting a morning radio show, and that’s when things really started taking off.
While shopping one day, she noticed an adorable, fashion-forward trench coat… for a dog. And she realized that pets have better fashion options than people with disabilities. So she was hell-bent on changing that. She used her radio platform to create the PJ Deejay campaign, where she wore only pajamas for a year and passed around information to people about accessible clothing. Stephanie went back to school once again, getting her second graduate degree – this time in fashion journalism – and became a personal stylist for people with disabilities.
She currently lives in LA and works a lot with performers who have disabilities. She has found incredible brands for her clients that help cater to their needs, like a shirt for people with MS which has magnetic closures instead of buttons, or an on-trend pair of jeans for people in wheelchairs which comes up higher in the back and has no seam or pockets, to maximize comfort and practicality.
Stephanie is incredibly passionate and determined to make life better for people with disabilities, and finds it amazing that something as simple as an article of clothing can make such a huge difference in someone’s spirit.
