This week’s Badass Chick is Jillian Katcher, a Harvard graduate who volunteers with Girls on the Run, a mentorship program that encourages girls 7-13 to lead joyful, healthy and confident lives through running.
When Jillian was in middle school, she struggled with her weight and now as an adult she still vividly remembers her peers picking on her. As she says, they suddenly got really good at being really mean. She wishes she had a program to teach her about proper, healthy physical activity, and that’s why she got involved with GOTR.
She currently serves on the board of the Northern Virginia chapter, and in the past has had the opportunity to be a mentor for a GOTR group. The girls would meet twice a week to discuss a new theme or lesson at each meeting. They start by discussing the topic, then running a lap, and afterwards coming back to discuss what they learned. Jillian and the girls would talk about body confidence, loving yourself and how to deal with bullies. What’s really cool is that each Girls on the Run season (fall & spring) culminates with a 5k, too.
To celebrate her 30th birthday, Jillian hosted a Soul Cycle fundraising class and brought in about $2,000 for Girls on the Run, which helps 12 girls go through the program for free. I love that Jillian is spending her free time being a massively positive role model for young girls. For that, she is my Badass Chick of the Week!
