This week’s Badass Chick is Amanda Ciolino, a mom-of-three and creator of the Boston branch of Sensible Sitters.
After having worked many years within health care advertising, Amanda took some time off to start her family. Two kids later, she was really getting the hang of the whole Mom in the City thing and balancing both time for herself and time with her children. She knew it required a lot of effort and help to make it all work, and she wanted to help other moms with the balancing act too. With her third child on the way, and feeling a bit bored by having been out of the workforce for a few years, she called her high school friend – a woman who happened to have started the babysitting service Sensible Sitters – and told her that she wanted to open up a Boston branch.
Just one month before her third child was born, she opened up the office entirely on her own and was hosting events for Sensible Sitters just weeks after giving birth. In addition to standard babysitting services, Boston’s Sensible Sitters has partnered with many fitness outlets to offer babysitting for moms while they work out. Now a year later, she employs 75 sitters and has expanded outside of Boston to Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and the Cape.
What I love the most about Amanda is her attitude; she believes there’s never really a “good” or “right” time to do something; you just have to jump into it, work hard and somehow it’ll work itself out. She’s 100% right, and for the risks that she’s taken in her careers, she’s my Badass Chick of the Week!
