This week’s Badass Chick is Barbara Bigelow, a mother, wife and school psychologist who has Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer and candidly blogs about her battle in the Cancer Chronicles.
In 2002, Barbara and her two sisters were diagnosed with breast cancer, which took the life of one of her sisters a year later. For ten years, Barbara was in remission until last January when she noticed something wasn’t right. Finally, in March, Barbara was officially diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer and was given 26 months to live. Despite having been diagnosed before, this was a whole new world. As she candidly puts it: she is dying.
Instead of letting fear, sadness or any other slew of emotions get the best of her, Barbara decided to face the issue head-on and blog about her life. She did it in an effort to become closer to her daughters, and also to make it easier for those around her to feel comfortable chatting with her. She researched metastatic breast cancer and is actively involved in raising awareness and money (she raised over $17,000 this year alone!) for the cause, since not much breast cancer funding goes toward this type of cancer.
Barbara has inspired those around her by being transparent about her fight and is working hard to find a cure for this deadly disease. She’s using her time here on earth to truly connect with and inspire others. For that, Barbara Bigelow is my Badass Chick of the Week!
