This week’s Badass Chick is 14-year-old Emily Todorov, the organizer of the Elizabeth Todorov Toy Drive which is done in memory of her mother.
For the past 13 years, Emily and her family have been collecting toys for pediatric hospital patients at UMass Memorial Hospital. By the time Emily was just three years old, her mom Elizabeth was battling breast cancer for the second time and became all too familiar with how homesick and dreary it is to be in the hospital day after day, especially around the holidays. So Elizabeth selflessly began organizing and collecting toys to distribute to children in the hospital during the holidays AND year-round, with the help of her husband Shawn and their daughter Emily.
When Emily was in second grade, Elizabeth passed away. Emily and her father knew they wanted to carry on Elizabeth’s tradition, and have continued to collect toys for the kids year after year. Last year, they collected $6,000 worth of toys and they are currently collecting toys for this holiday season until the 19th. Emily and Shawn have no plans to stop any time soon and they’re even working with the hospital to stock up their activity room with games for the children.
I love that Emily has found a beautiful way to honor her mom while also helping lift the spirits of so many local kids. For that, Emily (AND her mom!) is my Badass Chick of the Week!
If you want to donate to the toy drive, please drop off a new, unwrapped toy to the Sterling Fire Department at 5 Main St (stuffed animals can not be accepted, sorry!). Click here for a list of items needed.
