This week’s Badass Chick is Wanny Munoz, a teacher and volunteer working to enrich the lives of young Latina girls.
Originally an accounting major, Wanny felt pretty unfulfilled working her 9-5 job, so she decided to go back to school and become a teacher. While teaching in Lawrence, she was also volunteering with Chica Project, which focuses on Latina empowerment by providing mentorship, travel and workplace experience. Chica Project is amazing; there are five chapters in Massachusetts and the girls meet three times a month. In addition to sharing experiences, they work one-on-one with mentors and take part in great community projects as well.
Wanny eventually left teaching and is now working full-time with Chica Project through Americorps. Wanny believes that her childhood experience wouldn’t have been the same without the community programs available to her, so she’s working hard to replenish the jar of marbles she took a handful from, as she puts it. She and her father have created UWander, a subsidiary of Chica Project, in which girls from Chica Project travel to the Dominican Republic and lead an empowerment institute conference for over 250 girls down there. The UWander team has been training for this for six months. They head down there next month and are currently fundraising if you’re interested in learning more and/or donating.
I love that Wanny understands the importance of giving back to the community and offering her personal experience to set a new generation up for success!
