This week’s Badass Chick is Bik-Fung Ng, a restaurant industry veteran being honored by the Joslin Diabetes Center.
Bik-Fung was born in China and came to the US when she was 18 years old. Cooking had always been a special part of her life; she began cooking large meals for her family at the age of 12 (she even remembers her first meal: a squid, bean sprouts and ginger dish). Naturally, upon her arrival to the US, she began working in the restaurant industry while studying Human Resources in college.
After much schooling, multiple degrees, and plenty of work experience in the restaurant industry, she has become friends with famed chef Jasper White, who is very involved with diabetes research because he himself has it. In 2005, Jasper approached Bik-Fung to help him raise money for the Joslin Diabetes Center, and she gladly accepted the challenge. She’s been involved with their Taste of Ginger fundraiser since its inception, which benefits the Asian American Diabetes Initiative. Bik-Fung helps bridge the gap between American and Asian cuisine and what is healthiest for those living with diabetes.
Bik-Fung is being honored at the Taste of Ginger this year for all of her efforts over the years, and it’s well deserved. She’s truly a Badass Chick; not only does she work tirelessly for the AADI, but in her spare time (when she’s not working for the City of Boston), she volunteers with multiple organizations and she’s even a Stage 4 Breast Cancer survivor! Badass indeed.
The Taste of Ginger fundraiser is happening this year on Monday, April 4th at the Museum of Fine Arts; click here to learn more about it.
