This week’s Badass Chick is Madeleine Steczynski, co-creator of Zumix, a non-profit empowering youth to use music to make strong, positive changes in their community.
In 1991, Madeleine had recently moved to East Boston and was distraught over the fact that, day after day on the news, she would hear stories of young people killing other young people. She knew she had to do something, so focused on a common passion: music. With $200 and the help of her musician friends, she created Zumix. It began as a summer songwriting camp based on the simple idea that giving youth something to be passionate about could transform lives and elevate communities.
She was right. 25 years later, Zumix has grown from a 24-person youth summer program to a 500-person year-round community that enriches the lives of kids. Madeleine firmly believes that it’s up to adults to provide kids the opportunity to delve into what they’re passionate about. It creates a platform for kids to work together and become part of a bigger picture and, in turn, keeps them away from violence.
Madeleine is beyond dedicated to her original mission, and Zumix continues to grow year after year. They’ve got a fantastic roster of staff and volunteers (our very own Producer Matt is one of the volunteers at the radio station!) and she is an absolute Badass Chick for identifying a problem and honing in on a way to fix it.
