This week’s Badass Chicks are McKenzie Lavoie and her three-year-old daughter, Cosette. You may have heard about them!
Not too long ago, Cosette had one mission upon arriving at her library group gathering: to dress like what she wanted to be when she grew up. While plenty of girls showed up in princess costumes, Cosette showed up as a “Massachusetts Police K-9 Girl,” complete with her police sweatshirt, hat, whistle and stuffed dog. To her and her mom’s surprise, Cosette was made fun of by the other girls in her class – AND their moms – because they thought being a police officer was a job for just boys. Understandably, McKenzie was shocked – especially when one of the mothers joked that Cosette should just marry a police officer.
A few days later, Cosette came home from school with a drawing depicting what she wanted to be when she grew up: a princess. McKenzie’s heart sank, and she reached out to her friends in the police force for some “back up.” Two troopers from the State Police barracks in Southie showed up to Cosette’s school and talks to her and her classmates about how cool it is to be a cop, and how ANYONE – male or female! – can be one.
I LOVE the fact that McKenzie made a huge effort to make sure her daughter knows that she can be ANYTHING she wants to be when she grows up, and I adore the fact that Cosette is so interested in growing up to be in a position that is primarily held by men. For that, they are my Badass Chicks of the Week!
