In honor of Independence Day this weekend, this week’s Badass Chick is Margaret Corbin, who fought in the Revolutionary War.
In November of 1776, Margaret joined her husband out on the field as he fought for the Patriots. He was on the crew that fired cannons at the British. When Margaret’s husband died on the field, Margaret stepped right in and took over for him. It was only until she herself got wounded that she stopped fighting and, after the Patriots lost, was spared by the British because she was so wounded.
Margaret was included on military rolls until the end of the war and was later discharged in 1783. She became the first woman in US history to receive a military pension from Congress. Pretty badass, if you ask me.
