This week’s Badass Chick is Hannah McMeekin, a local girl working at the Center for Teen Empowerment whose mission is to empower young adults to solve community issues.
Hannah grew up in Vermont and studied Arabic and geography in college. After school was over, she began teaching Arabic at a local school and realized that she was more concerned with understanding the daily struggles her students faced, as opposed to how to get her students to understand this new language. She became very concerned with how she can best help her students not only inside the classroom, but outside as well. Hannah later stumbled upon the Center for Teen Empowerment, which hires local young people and trains them with the skills needed to address issues within their community. She knew she needed to make that her full-time job.
Hannah quit her teaching job and now works with students from the age of 14 – 21 who get paid to improve their community (yup! Paid!). For example, one week they’ll have a meeting with the gang unit of the local police department, the next week they’ll host an open mic night for kids to express their feelings.
I love that Hannah really focused on what mattered most to her and decided to make a career out of it, and it’s a career that not only provides students lifelong skills, but it also helps to improve the communities in the here and now!
