This week’s Badass Chick is Shayna Holloway, coordinator of BOLD Teens which is a Dorchester-based youth-led organization concentrating on social and environmental justice.
When Shayna was a teenager, she joined BOLD Teens because, simply, she wanted to help improve her community. She spent her years working with legislators, community members and city hall representatives in an effort to change the tobacco industry rules. BOLD Teens successfully stopped the tobacco companies from advertising in Boston’s local newspapers and also stopped local pharmacies in Dorchester from selling cigarettes. They offered the community valuable alternatives to create a healthier life, like the farmer’s market that was implemented in 2008 and is still going on today.
Shayna left for college and when she returned home, she still wanted to give back, so in addition to her job within the Boston Public School system, she is back working with the BOLD Teens as their coordinator. She makes sure her volunteers are focusing on the right things: staying in school (she checks their report cards each semester) and staying healthy. In fact, they’re hosting a skate night tonight at Chez Vous in Dorchester (6-8p, 11 Rhoades St.) with a live DJ so kids have something fun and healthy to do. Tickets are just $5 if you mention “Skate with Bold” at the door.
I love that Shayna is dedicating her free time to giving back to her community, and instilling great values in young people!
