This week’s Badass Chick is Amanda Farren of Cohasset; she created her own girls’ hockey teams in high school and college when she found out that there were only boys teams.
Amanda had been figure skating since she was a little girl and at the age of 10, she decided to play hockey because she wanted to be on a team. Upon entering high school, she discovered that there was no girls team, so she looked into joining the boys team. She was quickly discouraged (they told her they thought she would be a target and a liability during games) so she decided to take matters into her own hands and create her own girls team. Amanda reached out to girls in neighboring towns to create a team of about 25 women.
Later, Amanda went to college and faced the same issue: while there was a women’s varsity hockey team, there was no women’s club hockey team. Amanda went to work yet again, emailing her entire school to find other girls who were interested in joining her. Sure enough, she was able to pull it together and create one. She even helped to set the rules for the new league with other participating colleges. And, even though she has graduated, Amanda still is in contact with the team today to help them out.
I love that Amanda didn’t care at all about hockey being a predominantly “boys” sport, and she went ahead and made her own path for other girls to follow! For that, she is my Badass Chick of the Week!
