This week’s Badass Chick is Jess Fracalossi, owner of The Handle Bar, Boston’s largest independent indoor cycling chain.
After receiving her degree in biology, Jess was working for a start-up activewear company and loving her job. She became incredibly passionate about the work she was doing – so much so, that she had an epiphany one day. She thought to herself, if I am putting this much work into a company that I don’t personally own, imagine how much sweeter the reward would be if I put all of that effort into my own business that I love just as much.
Knowing that cycling was becoming a popular workout routine, Jess bought herself a copy of “Starting a Business for Dummies” (seriously), studied the business and ran a bunch of numbers. She began practicing her pitch to as many people as she could get in front of, and eventually was introduced to her brother’s friend who was interested in doing the same type of business plan. Exactly five years ago today, she received a call from him, informing her that he wasn’t interested in opening the business himself… he believed in her so much that he wanted her to do it, and he promised to get her in front of investors.
Jess pitched to his network of investors, and eventually she was able to open her first studio in 2013. She is involved in all of the day-to-day, nitty-gritty operating decisions, and even became a cycling instructor herself to understand every aspect of the business. Since then, she has expanded to two more locations and has become Boston’s largest independent indoor cycling chain.
