How Bag Raiders Scored A Viral Hit 9 Years After The Song’s Release

By Rami Abou-Sabe

Bag Raiders‘ “Shooting Star” has achieved newfound success on the Billboard charts, despite being released nine years ago. The groovy tune first made an appearance on the Australian duo’s 2008 EP Turbo Love, and was re-released on their self-titled full-length in 2010.

The song’s popularity took off when it appeared in this Jan. 23 video, featuring a man diving off a bridge at the urging of onlookers. Then, meme magic took over.

Two weeks later, Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl Halftime show got the “Shooting Stars” treatment, and Bag Raiders themselves shared the video. Gaga-through-space has amassed nearly 8 million views worldwide already.

The DJ duo, admittedly surprised by the viral success, are just happy their music is reaching more people. “Yes, it’s funny and cool how popular it’s become, but we love how much the song has meant to so many people,” they told Billboard. “It’s nice having something like this happen because it helped give [the song] a whole new audience.”

Currently the track sits at #14 on Billboards Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, and 2010’s Bag Raiders sits at #13 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums survey.
