This week’s Badass Chick is Wendy Saba, co-creator of a theater program for adults of all abilities called Stepping Stone.
In 1999, Wendy’s friend was looking for a theater program that would be suitable for her developmentally-disabled son. Realizing that many of those programs weren’t available to kids over the age of 21, the moms decided to do something about it and created Stepping Stone. It is an all-inclusive theater company for people of all abilities.
Every year, experienced theater professionals, newcomers and everyone in between join together to put on quite a show under the direction of Michael Celularo. What’s special about this director is that he is able to play to the strengths of everyone involved in the musical — so sometimes those with disabilities are paired up with people called “shadows,” who help them remember their lines and whatnot. Just last month, Stepping Stone’s production of Anything Goes was sold out every single night.
I love the whole idea of Stepping Stone — and, just in time for Mother’s Day, I think this proves that you should never underestimate the powers of a mom (or group of mamas!) who want to find the best opportunities for her kids!
