This week’s Badass Chick is Lieutenant Justyne Walorz of the Harwich Fire Department.
Justyne is a mom, a beach lover and a total badass. She’s been working within the fire department for 24 years, but what I love about her story is that she just sort of “discovered” it one day and fell in love. Prior to joining the fire department, Justyne worked as a buyer in fashion and also at a bank. She knew that cubicle life wasn’t for her, so she eventually landed within the fire department. As a firefighter on the Cape, she is incredibly well-trained and well-rounded; she responds to fire calls, water rescue calls, paramedic needs — you name it, she and her crew do it. Justyne even drives the ladder truck!
In a field that’s predominantly full of men, she’s actually one of three women within her department, which is a pretty solid number! One of my favorite things about Justyne is how adamant she is that there aren’t “man” jobs or “woman” jobs. If you’re a dude who wants to cut hair, go cut hair. If you’re a chick who wants to be a fire fighter, go fight fires. There are no rules – just do you, and be happy. And I absolutely love that.
